Potential issues during use
Some applications might need minor adjustments to function seamlessly with DaDesktop
Cloning problems with Fresh Start and available solutions
The majority of applications behave entirely as expected when set up on the Fresh Start machine with DaDesktop (DD). However, a couple of applications encounter issues because of the cloning procedure, requiring additional steps to resume normal function.
- Oracle Database Server - Requires changing the hostname from the duplicated one to 127.0.0.1
- Hyper-V server - Hyper-V encounters duplicate MAC address conflicts when the External switch is on, following a clone from FreshStart
- Google Chrome - Chrome might fail to launch properly on cloned machines if the profile remained linked to the Fresh Start machine, especially when the Fresh Start machine wasn’t completely shut down prior to cloning
- WSL - Windows System for Linux - Testing has revealed that DaDesktop machines with WSL installed are not portable: moving such a machine to a different DD server prevents successful booting. The exact cause remains unclear, but it’s thought that Windows forms a hardware dependency that breaks when relocated. Since WSL is seldom employed in training (typically Linux is used directly), this problem hasn’t been thoroughly investigated
- Issues where a trial software licence uses the MAC address to track the licence - In this scenario, the licence was bound to a MAC address; upon cloning, the licence appeared to be already activated and exhausted.
-
Software that demands licensing may need to be installed after the FreshStart clone is created.
Additional issues that can arise with DaDesktop
-
Extremely sluggish VirtualBox performance when both Hyper-V and VirtualBox are active (This happens outside DaDesktop as well)
Issue: VirtualBox on Windows becomes so slow that course delivery nearly impossible, but the fix is quite straightforward:-
Solution 1: Remove Hyper-V virtualization from Windows:https://www.wintips.org/fix-virtualbox-running-very-slow-in-windows-10-11/
Solution 2: Apply the Hyper-V Server workaround described earlier; otherwise, duplicate MAC addresses cause sluggish performance, boot delays, and other erratic behavior.
- Difficulties entering certain characters like Apostrophes / Quotation Marks, Inverted Commas into the DaDesktop machine.
